Baseball is 1 on 1, with 8 support players on defense. There are positions in the outfield they may only be an active part of play 2-3 times a game. With a great pitcher, none of the other 8(other than the catcher) may have to do much at all. On top of that, kid that's been playing ss since he was 6, can handle 95% of plays to him, so the better kid that can handle 99% of plays on defense rarely is of value unless there is a massive difference hitting the ball on o. This is why money ball works, they can identify where a team needs help and by how much, and make an improvement for little or no additional cost by looking at stats of lessor known/marketed players.
