It doesn't have to be the intention. It's automatically what happens when you hijack the occasion used specifically to honor the military for something else. There are a million ways to protest without hijacking an event used to show respect to soldiers.

The playing of the anthem before sporting events was started toward the end of World War I as a way to show reverence and respect to the soldiers that had given their lives and were currently fighting and has been used in that sentiment ever since. That's why you are asked to remove your hat. It's not some pompous handjob to the flag. It's paying respects to the dead.
It is a great failure of our older generations in the respect that there are so many like you that live in this nation and are ignorant of these things.
