quote:I read that too. Indicated the kid wanted a million to sign (inferred otherwise he would go the college route). Got offered $800,000 and his ‘advisor’ told him to turn it down. Also said he countered, requesting $850,000 and the team moved on. Then turned down another team’s offer of $700,000 and started having second thoughts.
I read the article about the Holman kid.
A week or so ago I posted a story that featured Brett Auerbach and detailed the (unglamorous) life of a minor league ball player. I do wonder what the tipping point ($ wise) would be to sign right out of high school and progress through the farm system to get to the big leagues vs going the college route. Wouldn’t SEC facilities, training and nutrition programs rival most anything the minors could offer?
Uncle Sam and state/local governments would get their “fair share” of the signing bonus (36-40% if google can be trusted). Then the advisor/agent could get a cut. How much of what was left would an 18 year old be willing to invest (and leave invested) for the future? Or set aside for college if things didn’t work out in baseball? How much would he want to use to not share a bedroom with a minor league teammate like Brett has to?
On the other hand, there’s no guarantee that going the college route first will get you there either. It’s a tough call.
Coach Bo is staying in touch and is selling him on the benefits of going the college route and making more down the road.
Hope he comes to peace with whatever the ultimate decision is.
Oh, and
