Another great Alabama player for sure. I know he came from Birmingham, somewhere around Fairfield. But he may very well have a strong Mobile connection.
You are right, the Fairfield/Pleasant Grove area, more precisely Westfield which I think is just an "area". Westfield High was located on the Miles College campus. Westfield was kind of in the midst of the massive U.S. Steel Fairfield plant property.
As far as I know, Willie Mays had no Mobile connection, but I could be wrong.
Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, Early Wynn, Don Sutton, Carl Lewis, Mia Hamm, Evander Holyfield, not to mention football players and coaches and a number of other great athletes were also born in Alabama. Louis, Owens, Mays, Aaron and Paige were not just superstars but transcendent figures in their sport, McCovey almost for a few years.

Joe Louis
The Brown Bomber was born and lived in Lafayette Alabama. His birth home is still there and they have a little museum dedicated to him. I happen to know a number of his kinfolk and believe it or not they still carry a lot of his facial characteristics. My grandfather boxed in the military and loved Joe Louis. I learned early, never bring up Muhammad Ali in his presence.
