South Carolina's mascot pays homage to General Thomas Sumter, who played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War. He was nicknamed "The Gamecock" bc of his tenacity and willingness to fight till the death.

Coastal Carolina's mascot, a Chanticleer, is from Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales." Coastal was originally a satellite campus of The University of South Carolina until the two parted ways in a not so civil break up. Their mascot was chosen to be similar to ours when we created the campus bc of them being an extension of USC.
