Shocked is when Pat Dye took over for Barfield, that was shock, I doubt it will be that extreme.
What a mess the program was. We had a running back (no names) caught smoking spliffs in the athletic dorm so they moved him to Mag Hall "to keep a better eye on him". Caught smoking spliffs there so moved him back to Sewell.
At a keg party on a Friday night and starters there, drunker than Cooter Brown, with a noon game the next day.
Dye was hired and I was talking with one of our starting OL and asked how Pat was going to work out. He said one of the first meetings, our best DL said he was not running steps for breaking curfew and Dye took his scholly right there in front of everyone. Said you could have heard a pin drop and EVERYONE knew there was a new sheriff in town.
Doubt kids today would put up with that disciplinary extreme, and I doubt the players we have now need that. But they certainly need to see the program move in a different direction.

1981 was a tough year, but the close losses to Nebraska, UT and Bama showed that we were capable of competing with the elite as a program. By the end of ‘82 we knew we had arrived.
