Mullen was arrogant, thought he could spend the lsu week resting his best players for bama and practicing for bama, disregarded lsu based on how shitty they had been. Even if they had ended up winning the bama game they were still out. That lsu loss was just too bad, and there were 5 teams with 0 or 1 loss to choose from
