Actually I was impressed with how the head ref handled it. If memory serves, he waited until the stretcher was safely out of the stadium before announcing the penalty, and then carefully omitted mentioning the mandatory ejection (since it was a moot point).

We often bitch about the targeting rule, but that was the exact situation it was designed to try to avoid.
