Watching LSU & Alabama game on replay. LSU runs the ball and picks up a first down. 2 flags on the play. LSU holding (10 yards) and Alabama personal foul face mask (15 yards). How/why do these penalties “offset”?

Because neither are dead ball fouls.

Flags offset regardless of yardage.

They are both live ball fouls and they replay the down. Otherwise you would penalize the offense 10 yards and the defense 5 yards and the offense would lose the down. In that scenario you would be awarding the offense 5 yards for holding when they most likely wouldn't have gained those 5 yards.
