Shamefuly, I must admit that I considered covid-19 to be media hysteria at first. Sadly, thats not the case.

In my many years on this earth,I've not seen anything come close to this.
Though it may be over reaction,I'm willing to heed the warnings and do my part to slow this down.
We as a country have had a history of watching out for one another. What has happened recently to change that?

Just wondering but what do you mean here?
I know i posted this same thing in another thread but ive felt the exact opposite in terms of people helping other people here lately.
Gotta give it to the people of NY. I’ve only lived here for 5 years and have had nothing but an amazing experience being here, everyone has always been extremely neighborly and friendly even before this
But now it’s just something different. Entire community is coming together, working together to kick this viruses arse, and it’s been a really uplifting sight. The new rules in place everyone’s been listening, small businesses are hurting and the amount of charities I’ve seen pop up and donations made has been amazing. The other day I saw a bar raise 5k in the span of a few hours.
I fricking love my new home.

My opinion? A very long stretch of prosperity and [relative] social rest.
I think we have a large amount of younger people who have no concept of hardship and a resultant inability to feel empathy for their fellow Americans who are not as fortunate as them.
We also have a lot of young people who's parents and grandparents were abundantly well off.
I think abundance of wealth is inherently evil and that is reflected in the noticeable difference in behavior and ability to empathize present in individuals who come from 2+ generations of this sort of wealth.
When you are removed by multiple generations from hardship, it is unlikely that you are raised in a way to understand the concept of frugality, not always getting what you want, and even caring for others.
Even in this newly socially aware world, I know people who champion equality when conversing with peers but will look in disgust at a homeless person that has to beg for money.
That and we have a film and television industry that is able to profoundly affect our emotions and views on the world around us. Prior to the rise of the movie industry, we were influenced by music and books. However the musicians and authors were usually troubled individuals that somehow still managed to have a firm grasp on morality. Contrast that to the actors and actresses that live like emperors and empresses.
I think there is still hope yet for our newly plagued nation. This horrific event seems like it is slowly opening peoples' eyes to how incompetent our current crop of politicians are and how useless our celebrity overlords are. America has stumbled may times in her history, but never has she fallen.
We've overcome slavery, segregation, wars, and other evils that have plagued our society.

There are those that refuse to believe we have a problem. We as a country have fought many enemies, and this is one of them.
We saw people jump out of twin towers to die and it struck us to the heart.Yet people drowning in their lung fluids is acceptable.
We are better than that.

You said we haven’t been watching out for eachother and I’ve seen the opposite here
Grocery stores are taking extra precautions , people are listening to the rules in place and keeping socially distant, Ive seen some grocery stores have an hour or two dedicated just to shopping for seniors, bars/restaurants are all closed no ones not listening and keeping open because “frick it we are young”

That may be an issue elsewhere but I haven’t seen it here the last month

Studies have suggested that, as a species, we are overwhelmingly predisposed to help one another during times of hardship. Which seems odd in the face of some folks who scream to the Heavens "I've got mine, frick the poor people."
Yet those people are ranting about the abstract idea of someone less fortunate than them. When presented with the reality of someone less off they tend to be just as generous as others.
By the same token, those who throw an absolute woobler over the idea of helping rich, old, white people every day will, in an emergency, jump right into that flooded river to save someone drowning no matter what color their skin.
Unless you are a sociopath, and there are quite a few of those in the general population, no matter what your views are you will knuckle down and do your best to help out when it everything drops into the toilet.
