Like Bounds said this morning. We're in a conference with Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida and LSU. No matter who the coaches are at those schools, those teams will get 70% of the attention from the media. The other 9 schools fight for smaller pieces of the pie.
You have to have someone interesting or charismatic to carve off enough of that pie to have a chance at relevance. Ole Miss did that with Kiffin. State did it in the past with Sherrill. South Carolina with Spurrier ended up getting a huge chunk of the 30% and was successful.
State's last six coaches:
Moorhead - boring
Mullen - interesting
Croom - boring except for his initial hire
Sherrill - charismatic and interesting
Felker - boring
Bellard - boring
Sherrill and Mullen were the only two that had any success
With a good coach, We are a school that can get 6-8 wins every year. Once a decade, if the stars align, we can get to 10. We are not competing for championships.
With an average coach, we are looking at 4-5 wins and the occasional 6-7 win seasons.
If we hire a bad coach, its going to be really bad.

And now you know what it feels like to be an Alabama baseball fan right now.
