I thought the whole narrative for over a decade has been that he can win with others' recruits, but not his own. Because he actually can't recruit that well.

He was actually a good recruiter, just lazy when it came to recruiting.

He could pull in a 5 star from anywhere in the country, but he would spend all his energy on this player then fill the class with diamonds in the rough.

He recruited better at OM overall, but was hung up on finding the next DMAC, first McFadden then McCluster.

In a twist of irony, he basically lost his job similar to Danny Ford did here. He abandoned his power I offense to run the same HS offense that Gus has ran, especially after he landed Masoli. This is one of the reasons why Freeze "turned things around" so quickly, the offense players were being recruited more to his style of offense. Ford of course was fired after a down year when he was recruiting toward and installing a pro-style offense, which Nutt came in running a similar offense and we all know how that turned out.

Its weird that when Gus was hired all I heard was how he was an offensive genius and Springdale high was throwing the ball all over the field, everyone made it sound like his offense was basically an NFL offense of today, yet 13 years later he is running the ball more than Nutt was at the time with a much more simplistic offense than Nutt was claimed to have ran at the time.

The game has passed gus by. He is not an innovative mind anymore. Just like chad the game has passed him by.

I agree that he got lazy. He also got caught up in "extracurricular" activities (such as texting Donna day and night and claiming it was for fundraising) when he should have been focusing on more productive endeavors with the team.

I all became a real-time, real-life soap opera with a supporting cast featuring Theresa, Danny, Diana, and many, many others including Mitch and his mama. And when Gus left the show, it still didn't miss a beat.
