If the information floating around is right and he's looke at 13-16 weeks of recovery, why would he redshirt?

That timeframe is WAY before the start of fall camp in college and is even a couple of months ahead of OTAs for NFL teams.

Assuming all goes well with his surgery and recovery and he decides to continue a football career, he'll be well and fully healed by the start of a 2020 season be it at Alabama or in the NFL.
