just like why is a holder not considered down on a fake field goal attempt

Mine is why is a spike not intentional grounding? The quarterback is literally intentionally grounding the ball.

I believe there is a rules exception for intentionally spiking that was instituted in the (relatively) recent past--maybe 10-15 years??? I don't believe it used to be the case.

You guys are talking about literal exceptions. The holder not being down is an exception to the normal rule. Why? Because the holder has to be down for the task.

Why is the spike not an intentional grounding? Because the intentional grounding rule is to prevent the QB from cheating a sack. Spiking is merely to stop the clock and is sacrificing a down to do so.

Rules have intentions which are tied to competitive aspects of play, safety, sportsmanship or some combination of those three.

I just wanna know what a catch is. What the hell is a "football move"? Why does a guy catching a ball in the middle of the field have to make a "football move" or take so many steps, while a guy who tiptoes the line of scrimmage to haul in a ball, and does so for a fraction of a second before stepping out get credited with a catch?
