Scheduling is hard for a 12 game season and only 8 conference games. No one wants to schedule an almost guaranteed loss, other than those needing a payday.
My preference would be to go back to 11 games regular season for all Div 1. Play 9 SEC games, only 2 OOC, conference CGs, and expand playoff to 8 teams.

100 FBS teams, most of whom would likely never sniff the playoffs in 50 years, aren't going to agree to forfeit the revenue of that 12th game just so 4 more of the top tier teams can get into the playoffs. Will never happen.
