It was only a FCS opponent, but still a college opponent. I watched for his poise early in the game: his understanding of the plays, his ability to make progressions and read the defense. His accuracy and whether or not he rushed his throws, or hung onto the ball too long.
He started out 12 for 12, so that pretty much answered most of those questions. He was hitting his targets mostly on the numbers - Bentley was well known for his wildness of accuracy especially early in games, and especially on long passes.
There were a lot of catches made by the taller receivers over the years Bentley was at QB - by TE Hurst, and WRs Edwards and OrTre Smith - where they made grabs by leaping and lunging at balls that were not really thrown at them, but near them. A number of times Bentley had bounced passes to targets, even when those targets were within 10-15 yds of him.
I didn't really see any of that from Hillinski against CHSO, so that was refreshing. But again it was a FCS opponent, and they weren't able to put any pressure whatsoever on Ryan the whole game. We made some changes on the OL after the UNC game - the Tarheels were able to pressure Bentley most of the game.
We'll know more against a better DL like Alabama, but with what sample size we have at this point, I was impressed with Hillinski, and think he will be a great one for us, as long as the staff doesn't screw him up.....
