Neyland was a great Patriot but guess you’ve never heard of Shug Jordan. One of the very few who made all 4 of the great landings during WWII. As a Major in the Army Combat Engineers he landed in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, and Okinawa.

When wounded at Normandy he refused to be relieved until their objective had been taken. One of very few who fought in both theaters of War.

Bryant spent most of his tour as a preflight trainer in North Carolina and Pensacola. He was also coaching football in the Navy. This is why when a reporter told Bryant once he was a great American that Bryant then said no Shug over there was a great American. It’s also why Shug never used War terms when describing football. He had seen it and knew it was a game.
