1994 World Cup. Columbia (favorite to win the World Cup) being eliminated by USA national team.

Not biggest upset in sports history, but a big upset.

It was an upset, but not one of the "biggest upsets in sports history". US had some good players. Lalas was playing in Italy. Dooley , Caligiuri, and Wynalda in Germany. Harkes, Jones, and Wegerle in England. Ramos in Spain. Sorber and Balboa in Mexico. Stewart in the Netherlands. Meola was a good GK in his own right, but was playing domestically. Many of those players are among the best we've ever had.

I also have a hard time putting it on the list when we got the win in part due to an own goal by Colombia and that player was murdered when he returned home.

That US team only lost 1-0 to Brazil (the eventual champions) in the Round of 16.
