Because his alternative was what? If he doesn't do it then it's an admission of guilt. Now all he can do is pray nothing goes further and still get paid in the meantime.
It's like when you take a piss test at work, you know you are going to fail, but you pretend like everything is OK and pray shite gets mixed up.
