Guys...I just want basketball to be relevant again. If Oats can do that, fantastic! I understand basketball priorities will never match football priorities but other schools are successful in both sports with big name coaches in place. It just seems like every basketball hire is a 50/50 risk...I believe Alabama could/can do a little better than that!

Without getting into the weeds, I think Bill Battle could’ve done a much better job in 2015. He was content to hold onto Grant so when the fans/boosters revolted, he was caught unprepared for a coaching search. His courtship of Marshall was way too public. He never should’ve flown out there unless he knew for sure he was coming back with Marshall on the plane. While Battle was meeting with Marshall, Marshall’s son was basically in the other room tweeting stuff about Wichita State. We basically gave Marshall leverage to get a raise.
When Marshall publically turned us down, Battle didn’t really have a Plan B until a mutual contact put Avery in his lap. Battle was pretty content at that point to wrap things up.
That’s all Monday Morning Quarterbacking, but that whole firing/search was just symptomatic our admin’s approach for so long. “Just enough to get by” seemed to be the mission statement.
Not taking away anything from AU & Pearl because they did what they needed to do to get on this run, but we allowed ourselves to slip to this position. It should be no surprise that AU got to the Final Four before us when you consider the attitude we've had towards basketball.
