He knew the deal with MSU was tainted. The other schools who recruited him (OK and TN) reported no solicitation for money. The shenanigans from Miss State boosters scared Cecil straight.

So, where was the money in that year long NCAA investigation? Surely they found something with help from the FBI?
Was it really so hard to believe that he chose Auburn over Miss State?
