It gave me neutral. However, my accent is unmistakenly Charlestonian in rhythm, cadence and vowel elongation. No one would confuse me with a denizen of the mid-west. I was taught to enunciate words correctly even if they are draped in a Southern drawl. I travel extensively and do bow to local pronunciations of places. Boise and Appalachia are two that almost all outsiders pronounce incorrectly. It is BOY-see and appa-LATCH-uh.

I've caught myself saying "sow caro-lina" before and thought, "wtf?"

The one that always bugs me is when certain people pronounce Tennessee. Some people put the emphasis on TENnessee. It sounds weird.

ETA: When they pronounce Tennessee they forget to put the "cock suckers" part in there.

Watching them struggle with the pronunciation of SC towns is always fun. Two of my faves are Lancaster (LAN-kuh-stir) and outsiders incorrectly pronounce it lan-KA-stir. And Beaufort..I hear ppl prounce it as "BO-furt." And dont get me started on street names like Gervais and Huger. They absolutely slaughter the pronunciation of those.
