There's only one logic explanation:
Someone in Vegas had a gun to Kirby's mother's head. hahaa
I have seen a lot of stupid plays over the years but that was undoubtedly the dumbest shite I have ever seen.

my best guess is that it was Fields (who should not have seen even a single snap) who fricked that up
