Your link was a recap of the game & did not mention OU refusing to play BYU. It did mentioned that OU coach Switzer lobbied that that the winner of OU/Wash be considered the default champion. He did do that-at the prompting of Orange Bowl to get better ratings. Switzer discussed all of this in his book Bootleggers Boy & even alluded to having a waste water treatment plant named in his honor in Utah.

We've already tried to explain to him about the bowl tie-ins back then. Just pat him on the head and move on.
