BOGOTA (Reuters) - Eight current and former officials of U.S. coal producer Drummond Co Inc [DRMND.UL] were called last week to testify before Colombian investigators about allegations the company supported far-right paramilitary death squads, a source from the attorney general’s office said on Tuesday.

Prosecutors have investigated allegations for more than a decade that Drummond financed paramilitary groups involved in the 2001 assassination of two union leaders in northern Colombia.

Drummond and company officials were exonerated by U.S. courts in the case. In Colombia officials were also exonerated, but a contractor was sentenced to 38 years in prison for making payments to the paramilitaries.

Drummond produces coal in the open pit mines of Pribbenow and El Descanso in the department of Cesar in northern Colombia. The company produced 32.4 million tons of coal in 2017 and exported 32.3 million tons from Colombia.

So... having private death squads is a bad thing?

Well there goes half the fun I would've had being rich. Thanks for ruining that dream for me BJ.

Drummond = serious money.

You don’t get that rich without a few dead bodies along the way.

(Unless you are an online video gamer where the dead bodies are virtual - but the money is real)

Drummond is an evil company. I don't doubt this story for one second.

I interviewed for a job at one of their subsidiaries a few years ago. I didn't realize they were a subsidiary when I went to the interview. The hiring manager was speechless when he called for a second interview and I declined saying I wanted nothing to do with any company associated with Drummond. This subsidiary was actually affiliated with one of their mines in Colombia, but I forget the connection.

It wasn't a "security" job, was it?

Good on you for not selling out though

Nah, it was a financial analyst/budgeting position. It did require quarterly trips to Bogota though.

I might have considered selling my soul for that, for the Colombian women and the pure cocaine

On a side note about evil companies...most European life insurance companies reaped a windfall from the Holocaust. It seems the Reich didn’t issue death certificates.

You can do the math.

Drummond's from Walker County. Half my family from Jasper. Always seemed to be a crazy and drunk dry county. The stories I've heard about that county back in the day are pretty nuts. Lots of huge money card games at The Musgrove CC with pistols on the table. Remember hearing that in the 60's-70's the per-capita in Walker Co. was thru the roof. All big coal money and presumably lots to do with the Drummonds. That town has changed a ton since I was a kid, but isn't it now known as the place to go to hire a hit man these days along with being a Bingo hot bed? Or is that just a joke about a small town that's gone to shite?

Also the home/former home of Burton Golf Bags. Had the golf world by the nuts forever. Made a huge percentage of tour bags. Never could design a good carry bag and got eaten up when the club manufacturers began making bags.

Interesting to read this about a family from a place, albeit distant, that I've known so well all of my life.
