Since there have been a lot of questions raised about why some players aren't getting enough touches...thought I would add some opinions.
1) Toney: electric player with shake and bake moves. But how is he in practice? Does he block downfield for fellow receivers? Academics in order? Runs crisp routes? If you were a receiver at practice busting your arse to run precise routes, blocking for other WRs and RBs and you have a kid who isn't doing that very well...would you want him taking your snaps? Think about that. And something else which someone else shared...is his endurance..he is small of frame still and may not have the physical part down yet.
Pierce: this is easy, hard for true frosh to pick a host of blocking schemes to protect the QB, pass catching routes etc etc. This can take a little time and you don't want defense to key on run plays when he is in the game because he doesn't know all the blocking schemes yet. And I did notice Scarlett Jordan block extremely well on DEs Saturday night.
I myself have wondered why Grimes hasn't been targeted much....but he and Franks have been room mates..so it isn't something like being ignored. The good news: a coaching change has done wonders for Josh Hammond and Freddie Swain.
I was impressed by Moral Stephens catch of a Franks bullet. TEs aren't known for especially good hands. But I hate to see passes thrown to Cynonti Lewis to be dropped. Frustrating. He probably is our best TE blocker though.

Toney has been a shithead during the offseason. He would have had a bunch of PT without the other options.

Through 4 games Swain has been the team MVP.

Toney had to have really made Mullen mad or frustrated. You can tell he is the most dangerous man on the field. Mullen isn't known to hold back weapons that gifted. See how frequently Harvin got the ball.
I suspect that if Toney is acting right, we see a lot more of him going forward.
Swain..man what a hidden gem Mac didn't use. Kid is a stud.
One player who needs it more. Cleveland. He is the best 50/50 ball winner on this team and one of the best in the country. That kid can battle for the ball. We must challenge DBs with him down field far more often and make them make a play.
Jefferson and Grimes need it more as well. We have a large list of get it to guys. I think the TEs are usually the safe check downs. Would like to see the Wrs be the check down passes more over TE.

I don't care as much about Pierce as others. I'm fine with Scarlett getting a lot of carries. He doesn't fumble and he gets tough yards.
As it stands now, I don't really care anymore. Freddie Swain has proven that he has taken a big step is at another level right now.
In any game, Jefferson or Cleveland can make a big play.
The one that does leave me scratching my head is Grimes, but with UF running only 40 and 50 plays per game, I'm ok with them just running a lot. Also, the more I watch this team, I see that Franks plays better when he has some designed runs and when he can hand off a lot.
Given that, I'm fine with them just feeding the running backs. I just wish they would let Toney run more. He only has 4 carries, but he has the highest YPC on the team. if we could just give him 3 or 4 rushes a game i'd be very very happy and I think the rest of the offense would benefit.

I wish they would run shallow drags over the middle with Toney. He would be a deadly YAC guy.

I can see the 110 mph fastballs bouncing off his hands right to the opposing safeties already.
Franks is improved but is still severely limited. If we miss out on Toney YAC but also lower turnovers, then sorry Mr Toney, we're going to find other ways to move the ball until FF gets some better touch underneath.

And it's me who comes to defend Franks:
He's actually pretty good with the mesh routes. The worst route for him is the short hook, for whatever reason, those are almost consistently overthrown or thrown too hard.
But the crossing patterns (short) have been pretty money for him and I think could be useful.

I believe the ball needs to be spread around more also. I do know one thing though, I love that we have the skill positions and can say we need to get this person and that person involved more. Makes it harder for the defense to game plan for us because we could have a different playmaker making plays each game.

I've said like a million times that Franks can actually be extremely successful if we retool our offense to fit his strengths. His strength is the short passing game -- he's hitting over 90% of his passes there. I'll wager, too, that if I go to the CHSU game it'll only further support my claims.
My problem is that he's terrible with the intermediate/deep stuff but he's throwing well over 50% of his passes there.
Either Franks is electing those throws or they're being called for him by Mullen. My point is: If we're going to throw over 50% downfield, then put in Trask who had a much, much better showing in the Spring Game (head to head) and is clearly more comfortable throwing downfield.
BUT, if we're going with Franks. Hit those bubble screens, the slants, the mesh throws, screens, everything. He's done very well in those passes, put him in a position to win. Asking him to toss it downfield is our greatest offensive hindrance.

Straws I think you just don't see a big picture. This year is about building the future. It's what a first year is. In order for us to contend the next year or two after this, we need Fransk to get over his flaws as much as possible. See this as each game is a learning process this year. Mullen basically said so at the beginning. We know Mullen will throw the short ball did it a ton here as OC and at State. Maybe it's part of building Frank's weaknesses up for now. Or maybe not. Seems like he is trying to make Frank's a good Qb down the road. I think making him learn to read the field, progress reads, etc are all a part of this.
I suspect we see more screen and short throws now in the meat of the schedule though. Especially to Toney and Swain.

I see the big picture, but I just don't think he's going to pan out in the long run. The next two years we need a game manager, and the guy who can't read the field is not the guy who will run this offense.
Del Rio would kill it in this offense with how much time our OL is giving.
Anyone who thinks he's going to be an NFL QB is going to be very sad when we play real teams (like Kentucky).
He's throwing 92% short passes and throwing over 50% of his longer passes, it's a waste of time and it's already lost us a game. It wasn't the only reason, but it played a huge role in not getting our defense off of the field.

Bro...Del Rio can't run this offense. Mullen requires a running QB and a bigger one. Jeff would be perfect for this offense yes. But remember..he looked like shite too because of bad coaching. Then went on to do pretty damn well for himself.
I would argue two years learning from Nuss, actually hurt him more than helped. That guy seriously had no fricking clue what he was doing. I thought I hated Addazio...boy was I wrong. My hatred for Nuss is...more than some rival coaches for how bad he was.

Dude, Franks can't run. His numbers get worse in that respect every game. NO ONE fears him running the ball. Look at that pitiful jump he did in the red zone where even the defender looked sorry for him.
Posted on 9/25/18 at 6:02 pm to StrawsDrawnAtRandom
You dont have to be Michael Vick to be considered a runner. Franks can run well enough to be a threat to gain yards if need be. Thats what matters.
Posted on 9/26/18 at 12:58 pm to StrawsDrawnAtRandom
He runs fine. He isn't an explosive, eluxsive runner he is more of a 3-5 yard type. Which is fine. Mullen uses his QBs like that.

He is going to get hurt. His dancing/jumping is what gets him caught up behind the line. He's not the type of shoulder down runner that fits Mullen's offense.

The jumping was once..and it was dumb as shite but don't like it's common. He probably gets laughed at in the film room for that for sure.
He is a big boy. Just cause he has QB by his name doesn't mean he is soft. He is bigger than our Wrs. He can handle a hit. He does need to lower pad level more but he has shown ability to bust open once or twice s game if the defense isn't ready for it.
