Lafayette starts with Laf though which could be the long a or short a vowel sound.

I can’t think of an example where an o is prounounced like it’s an e other than aubs pronouncing Jordan, Jerdin.

Out of all the Lafayette’s in the USA, the only that I know of that is pronounced starting with “Laugh” is Lafayette, LA.

Do people in other southern states say it properly or like the rest of the country?

It’s only because the coach pronounced his name that way. They only say his name like that. Michael Jordan is pronounced the normal way. It’s like all the people who properly pronounce Orgeron’s name. The R is silent and the G is a soft G the same way it is in “Baton Rouge.”

Oh Ger Ron. Very simple. Many folks choose to ignore the correct way to say it. (If you want to be extra French, you also don’t pronounce fully the last N. A very nasally sound. It’s a little difficult we don’t expect everyone to do that part.)
