Losing to Kentucky sucks, but might not be such a bad thing in the long run

Y'all might string me up after that, but hear me out.

Mark Twain once said something along the line of "swallow a frog in the morning and your day is bound to get better." I present to you we just swallowed our proverbial frog.

The fact that we haven't lost to Kentucky the past few years is almost mind boggling and I think we can all agree that we probably deserved to lose on those instances. We've skated by and by doing so created higher expectations for the rest of the year, only to come up short.

Well, I think we've got realistic expectations for the rest of the year. We all know we weren't going to win every game this year and it might get ugly at times, but I don't think anyone really looked at the schedule until Miss St. I know I didn't . Kentucky is just Kentucky. Who cares? Kentucky cared. Honestly, its kind of a relief. Let's forget where we've been. Lets look to where we can go from here.

And not only is it a wake up call for the fanbase, but for the team. We looked soft. We couldn't tackle a bale of hay on Saturday. Receivers couldn't catch the easy ones. If they aren't pissed off at themselves, they need to be.

Whether this loss turns the team around or sets the tone for the rest of the year, at least we don't have false expectations. The monkey of NOT losing to UK is gone. The taking for granted all the talent we have is gone. Overlooking opponents is gone. All is gone except for us to just to hope for the best and support the team.

In all kinds of weather.

Well we have Colorado State coming to town after leaving 18-20% humidity....they may faint 20 minutes after departing their plane...except the HC, ex UGA QB.

If we can drummed them into oblivion then I am going to implode. Our team needs to be angry mad and spitting fire. What Mullen says in pressers and what he says in meeting rooms and the locker room could be totally different. He needs to chew arse a plenty. He has stated he hates losing and its time to show it. I can understand why he didn't get emotional at halftime being interviewed, its best to save it for behind closed doors.

Certain things may get better if people play harder, but at the end of the day the talent on this team just isn't what we are used too.

We got sold a bill of goods on Zuniga and Polite. Those are 3 star DEs and it shows.

The guys in the middle are probably are best linemen from a talent perspective, but are inconsistent.

LB is a shite show of talentless, out-of-position, players that don't know how to tackle. Vosean Joseph should just be benched. The guy is almost always out of position. Rayshad Jackson tries hard, but just isn't that talented.

The secondary is filled with young, talentless players outside of Hendersen and Chauncey, and Chauncey still can't tackle all that well either.

Hard to be positive about this team right now.

Especially with the head scratching game plan from the coaches as well.

I'm desperately hoping this is our Ole Miss game where nothing went right, but I kind of know this is our Tennessee year.

The good news is that almost all of our bluechips coming in (especially at LB) are probably going to play right away. Like, tomorrow. Literally.

QB: Start Emory/Trask immediately, or Toney if we're going for an exotic run first offense.

RB: Start Perine/Pierce.

WR: So far this position is decent, get Toney more touches.

TE: Put in some new blood -- Krull and Pitts.

OL: Not going to get any better, shift Ivey inside, throw someone else to the wolves on the edge. Change the offensive gameplan to get the ball out quicker or get a QB who can read the defense.

DL: Not sure what to make of it just yet, on pass rush they're money, but too undisciplined and often over rush the play for mobile Quarterbacks.

DE: Had a terribly undisciplined game.

LBs: Same as the DE, they were completely out of position all game.

CBs: Trey Dean actually did really well, he's a very physical DB who might not be that steep of a drop-off from Wilson, and Gardner-Johnson did everything he could to help the terrible LB play on Saturday.

Safeties: Man, just drop them in two deep or have them spy the backfield. They did nothing right the last game, and #29 (I believe it was Stiner) played like d o g s h i t.

There is a silver-lining, though, in that we have a chance to sell to recruits (especially in Florida) that they can be the face of change and bring our program back.

Miami isn't in much of a better position and Florida State is a disaster.

The pass rush is not money. It's nonexistent.

That's just patently untrue.

quote:

Evidence.
Kentucky's OL and their QB making plays:
0:12 - Scramble out of a pocket that lasted one second.
0:29 - Pressured but rolls out for TD pass.
2:01 - Scrambled out of a pocket that lasted one second.
2:20 - Pass with contact.
4:04 - Pressured out of pocket, rushes for first down.

The DL definitely got on pass rush, but as I said, they overcommitted and often times overran the protection, giving huge gaps for the mobile QB to get out.

The DEs got sucked in and were trying to make plays Slayer, the gloom and doom isn't helping. Why don't we just shitcan our football program altogether then, according to your very dark sided assessment.

Effort was there on defense pal...OL? That's another question. Effort and a damn good team wanting a W 100x more than we did equals loss.

As Straws pointed out...we had a LOADED team in 2008 but still lost to a bunch of 3 stars in Ole Miss in the damn SWAMP. Slayer you cant tell me that 2008 team wasn't talented as hell. shite happens, its football. Lets see how we do going forward.

I'm not saying this is our Ole Miss, but I mean our defense did give up like 31 points at home with a Championship winning team, so I'm not fully checked out yet to say this wasn't an anomaly.

The problem with the defensive line was discipline and absolutely no help from the LBs. They were just in terrible positions and they were the worst tackling unit yesterday outside of maybe DBs.

DBs -- we need to switch up again. Gardner ought to be playing outside CB and move Trey to Safety, he is literally the only physical player on defense.

Stiner was terrible at Safety last night, abysmal. Almost every big play was a result of his angle or capacity to defend the pass.

Also: Yes, the defense got caught trying to make "blow up" tackles, or statement tackles and did the exact opposite of what they had been doing the entire CHSU game -- gang tackling. They didn't really try to wrap up, hopefully this was a gut check and they come out next week a little better.

Stiner, Stewart & J. Taylor did not perform well at all, but lets face it...when the other teams pounding the frick out of you on the ground they are being coached to help with the run first. Stewart got sucked in on that 1 TD pass because of UK destroying us on the ground. Taylor missed way too many tackles. At LB I do think Joseph played well considering our DL open the floodgates and they (UK) were blocking second level at will.

We got out hustled, out coached and didn't want it as bad. In 2008 we expected a cakewalk also. Ole Miss wanted it a lot more. Its the rich kids vs the poor kids.

That UK center was a shareplow and made Slaton his bitch.

Maybe a valuable lesson? Lets wait a few games and see how we play. UT & Cowbells are going to be the two SEC schools we have to travel to next after CSU.

Ole miss didn’t run for 300 yards that game either. It’s apples and oranges. The dl played like shiiiit.

Also don’t tell me what to do old fart lol.

Stop being negative about the ol. Your doom and gloom isn’t helping anything...........

In big clear passing situations when we needed pressure we got nothing and most of his scrambles went for big plays. Uf dl sucked. Lb was worse and that says something lol.

The problem is that they got pressure but there was no help from the LBs.

Honestly, if it were up to me. I would have moved Gardner-Johnson back as a middle safety spy and moved up a safety into the box every down. We needed a lot more speed to actually help the DL, but the DL just played super undisciplined ball.

They got penetration, they just had no one to clean up after they got there -- combined with some poor tackling and their QB got a lot of free yards.

All I know is that if we're going to be successful, our offense has to step the frick up.

They scored less points than the average last year, and the defense held the other team to less points than the average last year. It's just time that we look like we have a real offense.
