Quotes on Sal Canella:
quote:

"He's a guy that Stidham trusts," Malzahn said. "He's a real versatile guy, too. He's not just a receiver. I mean, he can do a lot of different things.... He gives the offense a lot of flexibility. And he's improved too. Last year was his first rodeo, and there's nothing like experience."
quote:

"I think he'd lost a little bit of that confidence in himself and I feel like he has regained that," receiver Ryan Davis said. "I feel like his teammates keep encouraging him, keep him uplifted. He's put the work in. He knew what he needed to work on as well. Just having that confidence and swagger about him; if you do drop a pass or you do mess up an assignment, you can come back and bounce back from that. Now it's him just consistently catching the ball and making plays."
quote:

"It's a bigger target for (Stidham) to throw across the middle and things like that," Davis said. "It's a mismatch problem as well going against shorter linebackers or even nickels and safeties. It's kind of a mismatch and you can still throw fades in the slot because he's a big body/back shoulder type of guy. It brings a different element and it's a bigger target for Jarrett."
quote:

"Sal's a great player, has great talent, has great upside, he has size," Davis said. "... I know he's definitely put a lot of work in this offseason; I put in some work in with him as well. He's taking that next step and just being more consistent. I feel like he's taken that next step forward, being able to be on the field more. He's earned that. I'm proud of Sal, where he's at right now."

Quotes on Stidham's growth
quote:

According to Pro Football Focus, Stidham completed 74 percent of his passes (81 percent adjusted completion percentage) with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions last season when he was pressure-free, for a PFF grade of 89.0. His grade plummeted to just 46.3 when he was pressured, with three touchdowns and three interceptions, to say nothing of the 36 sacks he took last season.

With two new pieces on a rebuilding offensive line, No. 9 Auburn will have to rely on a far less experienced group to protect Stidham from the defense of No. 6 Washington, which tied for 14th nationally with 39 sacks last season.
quote:

"I think Jarrett, from his standpoint of maybe understanding six-man protection, where he came from (at Baylor), they didn't do as much of that probably; it was more seven-man," Lindsey said. "So I think he's continuing to grow just by watching film. And then, I think, being in the SEC a year, realizing and understanding that the D-lines we play are pretty good, and he gets a chance to do that every day in practice. I think a lot of that just comes with experience, to be honest."

Stidham says he has greater knowledge of protections now than he did last season. He's also taken on greater responsibilities for making calls at the line of scrimmage, not only in checking in and out of plays, but in adjusting the offensive line.

"The main thing, when you talk about pressure, getting pressure from a defense, is understanding when you're protected and when you're not protected," Stidham said. "I have a much better understanding now of our protections and I'm able to really feel out certain things -- just take control of the offensive line when I need to. So, I think, when you're talking about pressure, understanding offensively what you're doing, you can counteract some of that."
