He was before my time, but he is probably the worst MSU coach, at least total record-wise, with a record of 16-45-2 over 6 seasons with a total of 5 SEC wins. If you take out Felker's 6-1 hot start to the 1986 season, his tenure was the worst. He had only 5 SEC wins in 5 seasons with 2 of those coming in the first 7 games of his tenure.

I eliminate Shira because that was long before most people gave a shite about football at Mississippi State. It's why I hate the all-time record argument.

Croom surpasses them all because he was here during a time where SEC football was entering the stratosphere from a popularity standpoint. For the better part of his tenure, we weren't even competitive. Sherrill's last two years and Croom's first three were probably the most futile 5 years in State modern football history.

Croom won a bogus coach of the year award after a 7-5 season and a titillating 10-3 win over mighty UCF in the Liberty Bowl where Croom's offensive juggernaut managed 199 yards of total offense. He followed that momentous achievement by losing to Louisiana Tech to start his fifth, and thankfully last season at the helm. Lest we forget, that season also included losses to Kentucky and Georgia Tech, as well as the aforementioned 3-2 loss to Auburn and a 45-0 shellacking at the hands of Ole Miss.

Sylvester Croom was so bad that the guy who followed him is revered as the best coach in our history because he managed to average 7.5 wins per season. That's how low Croom set the bar for our program.

And what is so bad is that we had fans that wanted Croom to have more time! Seriously, they thought we did Croom wrong when we fired him. Croom only had one offense here average 300 yards per game. That is absolutely pathetic.

Everyone has their arguments about who is the worst MSU coach. I have a hard time arguing against Shira, Felker and Croom, to be honest. They all had their shortcomings and had horrible records to show for it. Shira couldn't take advantage of Vaught's retirement from Ole Miss as HC in the early 70's. Felker could recruit apparently, but couldn't win SEC games to save his life. Croom was way too stubborn for his own good and mismanaged the offensive talent we had.

...but he was a GROUNDBREAKING HIRE! His regime set the standard for bringing SEC football into the 21st century.
