SEC is currently and over the past few decades been the best college football conference from top to bottom.

Here's the truth. At least since the 30s the SEC has been the best conference in college football. A case can be made for every decade except for the 50s.

IMO, tough to rank before polls. The following 10s,20s is based on simple win %. Probably doesn't mean much. The schedules not much and varied wildly. The number of games were usually 6-9. Probably the only thing that means much is Bama's success in the Rose Bowl following the 1925 and 1926 seasons. This and GT's win in 1927, Bama's following 30 and 34 gave the South the credibility to be invited to the Rose and be considered in the polls that would follow.

10s: GT, AU, Vandy
20s: Alabama, Vandy, UT

The SEC began in 1933 and the AP poll in 1936. From this point forward the SEC has been the undisputed top conference.

30s: Alabama, UT, LSU, Tulane were ranked as decade top 25 programs
40s: GT, UGA and Miss joined (Tulane dropped out)
50s: AU began (UGA dropped out)
60s: UGA rejoined (GT droppped out)
70s: (Miss dropped out)
80s: UF began
90s: (LSU dropped out for a decade)
00s: LSU rejoined
10s: SC, MSU, Mo, A&M joined (UT dropped out)
