Neither is better.

I was spanked as a child and it helped me grow up.

But if you are spanking your child over and over, you need to take a look at the rest of your parenting choices. It should be done rarely if at all. I never had to spank either of my kids but neither one is very naturally stubborn. (Got lucky on that one)
