Where MSU ranks in regards to different categories:
Education: Dead Last.
Source.
Prestige: 1 Conference Championship (1941), 1 Division Championship (1998). So basically they were only half relevant 10 years before Mullen arrived and only ever won a conference while Hitler was in power.
Teams that have won their conference since MSU last won it:
Florida
Georgia
Tennessee
Alabama
LSU
Auburn
Arkansas
Ole Miss
fricking Kentucky
South Carolina
Texas A&M
Mizzou
You beat Vanderbilt, though.
Facilities: 9th overall in the SEC, 6th in the West with only A&M behind them (although that I highly doubt.)
Source.
Location: Just going to go ahead and say the worst or very close to being the worst.
So basically he's at the school with arguably the least resources across the board facing LSU (went to the NCG multiple times during his tenure), Alabama (same) and Auburn (same).
He was basically coaching with one hand behind his back, and now MSU fans come out of the woodwork crowing about how good their team will be this year that was built by Mullen (who apparently sucks).
He made MSU relevant during the most dominant stretch of any division from one conference and did it at the worst place to coach in said division.
Judging Mullen at MSU is like judging Meyer at Bowling Green.
