Projecting Alabama's defensive depth chart after Signing Day (BamaOnLine)

quote:

National Signing Day is in the rearview mirror, and Alabama now has a full tank to worth with -- or a full, 85-man roster of players -- for the not-so-distant 2018 college football season.

The reigning champs signed 20 combined players during the early and routine signing days, so the Crimson Tide’s projected 2018 depth chart needs to be adjusted with the additions.

Below is BamaOnLine’s best guess at the Tide’s defensive depth chart fo this season.

*** Disclaimer: This is not Alabama’s official depth chart. This is derived from the Crimson Tide’s official depth chart from fall camp of 2017, observations from all of the media viewing periods of practice from this past season and pure predictions on my part.

Defensive line

DE -- Raekwon Davis, LaBryan Ray, Stephon Wynn

NG -- Johnny Dwight, Phidarian Mathis

DE -- Isaiah Buggs, Quinnen Williams, Christian Barmore

Reasoning: Alabama lost four defensive linemen this offseason and signed two during the early signing period. Following a National Signing Day decommitment, Nick Saban voiced his desire to add a third defensive lineman, most likely a defensive tackle by way of graduate transfer. With the pool of returning players being thin, adding a nose guard is a top priority.

Players like Davis, Buggs, Williams and even Ray, as a true freshman, received plenty of reps in 2017, however, to lead the next wave of Tide D-inemen with Da’Ron Payne and company.
