Hyperbole on the "exponentially" comment

quote:

NCAA skims over 1 billion off the top every year in basketball so basketball schools revenue numbers are seriously understated. Because CFB pays no money to the NCAA they have more to split among themselves

I know this, but the OP is talking about the conference. It doesn't matter to the conference how much the NCAA makes.

Also, accounting differences by school means biggest may not reflect reality

What differences would make up an about $10 million difference at Kentucky in football and basketball revenue?

There's a reason the original Big East fell apart and a reason Temple and UConn choose to be in the American over the modern Big East. We're talking about basketball powerhouses who left a great, maybe the best, college basketball conference just to ensure they didn't miss out on the exploding amount of football money.

This is not just a financial discussion.

Its also about prestige and history.

Several posters have made good arguments about florida, even though they are "new money". They have good potential going forward.

I just don't know what the conference would hang our hat on in the basketball world, if the wildcats left the conference.

You do realize the NCAA has running credits (out about 7 years) for appearances which filters down to all conference members. Also, with multiple football teams the value of an individual school is lessened. If you have a single basketball it value is greater.

Also, it does matter to the conference as if the P5's break away as has often been discussed in these realignment scenarios that value currently siphoned off by the NCAA would greatly affect SEC's media values. Basketball schools overnight would be valued in Top 25 for revenue streams.
