He's not wrong, but he is an idiot. Does it say anywhere in the student handbook that any particular school is our biggest rival? This is an opinion that varies usually from where you live at and also how the series has played in the last 20 years

Yeah... I like WG, but he and I have disagreed on this for a good while. It basically comes down to what is your criteria for defining a "rivalry"...

It's definitely the "worst" loss as far as a coach is concerned to lose to Tech... but you could say that losing to fricking Norfolk State would be really bad as well for a coach and that doesn't mean it's a rivalry.

In my humble opinion, a rivalry is the game where you consistently tend to have the most on the line... some of that has to do with the actual impact of the game relative to the success you're having that season, some of that has to do with geographical bias as well...

As someone who grew up in Southeast GA, I'd say I'm probably like the poster who put it:
1) UF
2) AU
3) GT

At least for the 30 something years I've been watching UGA football. UF has been the most relevant program of the 3 during that stretch of time... multiple nattys, multiple SEC championships, the game directly impacts our success (or lack) in several key seasons (see 2002 for example).

AU again falls in second because that game also impacts conference success, and ultimately chance at the SECCG... also, of those 3 programs, has been easily the 2nd best program over the last 30 years or so...

GT *is* still a rival, even though they really haven't consistently been very good over that time... and in particular during the CPJ era, they've become a bit more of a nuisance than an actual football team.

I live in Atlanta now, so I understand why someone might want to have Tech higher on the list... and it's understandable if your concern with the rivalry is shite talking with your neighbor/coworker/etc... But the reality is this... losing to Tech doesn't actually impact UGA's primary goals in any meaningful capacity. You don't want to lose the game, but if you went undefeated through the season and lost to Tech, guess what... you're still going to the SECCG and if you win, it's highly unlikely you're left out of the playoffs. They quite literally don't matter any more from an end result standpoint.

Those are my opinions... but I understand that different fans may have different opinions. If you're over the age of 45 and from the ATL Metro area... Tech is probably #1... Auburn maybe 2, and who knows... Clemson maybe #3 over Florida... it's a preference thing at that point...

As someone else mentioned... if you live in Savannah, or Augusta.. you probably can't stand Carolina. Columbus... bump Auburn up... Rivalries aren't defined exclusively by the university... they are community based and the UGA fanbase, like any other school is not homogenous.

It would be interesting if GT were to come back into the SEC. I still would have UF on top, but I would then move GT into that second spot with AU bringing up the rear
