Frank Martin updated the status of former point guard Rakym Felder on Friday morning.

The suspended Gamecocks guard has received the approval from Martin and other university representatives to return to school in January, but the decision has been made by Martin that Felder will not play basketball this season.

“Rakym and I have gotten to a good place. My bosses and I have had that conversation. Everyone is on board with him becoming a part of our school again starting here in Janaury,” Martin said via teleconference. “That date has not been set. I have made the decision Rakym will not play this year. There are certain things I’m asking Rakym to do before I allow him to be a part of our day-to-day basketball team again. Those are things I am keeping in private for now.”

But this should come as no surprise. It was pre-determinded. He either made it back to school, enrolled this coming semester and remained under probation, or he failed to do what was asked of him and was basically declared persona non grata.

He's going to be back in school. If he keeps his nose clean then he plays next year and that's a good thing. Not a bad kid, just a kid who had a rough upbringing. Martin is doing his best to steer him in the right direction but with all of the missed practices and with this team having already deceloped a little chemistry and well into the season ... Martin had no choice really. Never did.

We're going to get it together this season. We'll be much improved by the end of January ... I think. I hope.

Hey...I admire him for not going the easy route and transferring. He hung around and stuck it out. Not many would've done that.

Too true, it would have been easy to walk away. Hopefully he learns from this and I respect what Martin is doing with him.

Yes, and to his own detriment. Martin doesn't have a point guard on this team, and Felder could have absolutely helped in making this team competitive.

Seems like Frank is packing it in for next year already.
