This was on Twitter. Found the exchange very interesting and thought y'all might, as well.
ETA: There were numerous replies to each of these tweets with additional info but it would have been nearly impossible to screenshot every single response.

Dayum CG! $250k!
We know they're doing it ... they've been doing it. I helped bust Tommy Bowden on a couple of players some years ago. They've never stopped doing it. Let's hope they slip up somewhere along the way.

When you have a church involved, it becomes so much easier to get away with paying players. First, you don't necessarily have boosters involved, which is a hot button issue for the NCAA. Second, churches have a lot of cash on hand from tithes and donations, which don't necessarily have to be put on the books as a check would be. Third, churches are 501 (c)(3) organizations and, as such, are subjected to far less auditing and oversight than your typical for-profit business. This is a perfect storm for paying players outside of the old fashioned bag man routine.

Like almost every other tradition Clemson has, they stole the idea from Auburn. Clemson's run of landing 5* star out of state recruits started the signing class after the sordid Can Newton recruiting investigation of alleged money funneling through the church took place. Their moribund program coming off a 6-7 losing season with a bowl loss to South Florida in Charlotte somehow landed four 5* players all from out of state - the most of any team in the country that year btw. Things that make you go hmmm.
