First of all there's an extra game now with the playoffs that gus didn't, so your last point is irrelevant.

-Gus's first year only lost in the regular seaosn on the road to LSU. An LSU team that was ranked as high as 6 and ended up ranked 14th. They won the SEC over a team ranked 5th then went to the posteason.

-Kirby's year only lost in the regular season on the road to AU. An AU team that was ranked as high as 2nd (also note that kirby also beat this same AU team). They won the SEC over a team ranked 2nd then went to the postseason.

In the 2 years we're comparing, Kirby's loss was to a better team, and their SECCG victory was over a better team.

At this point kirby losing is irrelevant since Gus lost the next game as well. To say this year isn't as good as Gus's 1st year is actually completely wrong now that I look at it.
