Athens has the typical lush rolling pine forests of North/Central Georgia. Columbia (SC) is somewhat similar.

Columbia is in the sand hills of central South Carolina, it is more similar to the inland coastal areas than the Piedmont foothills. Athens is predominately oak-hickory forests with rolling hills. Athens looks more like Knoxville without the smokies than Columbia.

People forget that 40 miles east of Columbia is the start of the Pee Dee region. Bishopville and Sumter are a world away from the Midlands and the Upstate.
