but this whole playoff committee deal is so insane to begin with.

Yep. How many times did the BCS get it wrong? Not that many at all. We should've just kept the BCS formula and taken the top 4 from there. The committee isn't about getting the four best teams in though, it's about making sure everybody is taken care of as much as possible.

^This was my thought exactly. There was never an issue to who was the top 3 teams were. I feel like the committee was just a way to draw up intrigue, and make the committee people feel important.

Well, when you realize we didn't go to the playoff format because the BCS was flawed, but because they could milk more money out of the college football season, it puts things in perspective.

The BCS ranking system had some significant issues. The computer models were not understood or transparent. Some of their results defied common sense. So much so that outliers were dropped before avseraging them. The polls used also have flaws, such as voters having biases, the tendency to overreact to the most recent game results, etc.

Those were some of the key reasons the committee model was crafted. It's approach, metrics and "rules" for evaluating and ranking the teams were carefully crafted to ensure an equitable ranking of teams relative to one another.

The CFP rankings produced are clearly better than those produced by the flawed computer models and polls averaged together to produce the BCS rankings.
