Is this really true? Surely there is a mathematical scenario with a bunch of East teams finishing 4-4 or a 3 way tie at 5-3.

There are several scenarios that feature some combination of Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia. But in each of those scenarios, Tennessee loses the tiebreaker.

Here's the one Tennessee comes closest to winning:

UT: 5-3
USCe: 5-3 (W UGA,UF; L Vandy)
UK: 5-3 (L to either Ole Miss or MSU, doesn't matter which)

It would come down to the third tiebreaker: Head to head competition against the team within the division with the best overall Conference record (divisional and non divisional) and proceeding through the division (multiple ties within the division will be broken from first to last and a tie for first place will be broken before a tie for fourth place);

South Carolina would win by way of beating Florida.
