TN used to be a football power for some reason. Even though their HS football is subpar when compared to surrounding states. Kids today can't remember a good UT program so it's harder to recruit.

Predicting this hire is a crapshoot. But they have a pretty bad track record lately, and will still be paying Butch and maybe even Dooley when the next hire is made.

Also, now that the East has their Saban, it's an even less desirable job.

Kirby is locking down Georgia Recruiting, where Tenn used to get most of their good recruits. Dabo is locking down the Carolinas. Richt and Jimbo have locked down Florida. Saban has locked down AL and LA.

Tennessee has no future until both Saban and Kirby are gone. Not enough talent in the state for a Tenn coach to achieve success in the SEC.

Those lily white teams were hell back in the 1950s.

Can't speak on the leather helmet era but they were so dominant in the 90s because goff and donnan couldn't keep the elite GA/ATL talent home and they went to UT. Cosey Coleman, deon grant, jason respert, jamal lewis, etc. You started to see the worm turn when Richt got here and now that it's kirby vs butch (lol) you're seeing that pipeline basically come to a dead halt.

Without the combination of state of GA talent and a very good/great coach it's a hell of a lot more difficult for UT to be successful. Currently they have neither.
