Stopping the option requires a sound plan where everybody plays their responsibility.
At the most basic level the interior lineman will squeeze to the dive and ILBs will step, fill, and tackle to stop the dive as well.
DE will play QBs. OLBs can play QB to pitch.
CBs are pitch and Safeties in the alley QB to pitch.
The times are a changin' but this was the way I was taught to defend the option. You can't get lulled to sleep because the one time you make a mistake and not take your responsibility you get gashed.
