Were they? BY USC standards... prob.

But Carroll left them (with a pretty good team too)

Lane's next 3 years 8-5, 10-2, 7-6 (lane left middle of a 3-2 year)
Gone.

Then their next 4 years were 10-4 (the 3-2 year), 9-4, 8-6 (played in the pac 12 title), 10-3 (Rose Bowl)

Miami, never seemed to miss a beat with talent, just had shite coaches.

USC had good records for sure. But comparatively, other than Lane's second year, they didn't finish higher than 4th-5th in their conference until last year.
