It was a bad turn out. There's no denying that. I wouldn't be excited about playing a team for the ninth time in history if my team sucked either.
No, fans like to "boycott" shite teams and shite games. Were conservatives boycotting when Mizzou got a good crowd for the UGA game last season? Politics has nothing to do with this.
