Religion was developed as a way of trying to explain how the world works. Monotheism was developed as a way to try and capture all the power that sprung up around religion. Now we have science that explains how the world ACTUALLY works.
I think your statement is fairly flawed as well. I mean how exactly did it contribute? I think you'll discover that most advancements happen when religious control is weakened :)
