A lot based on rumor here:
Bellard who's team started the '78 season 4-0 and ranked in the top ten, had lost 2 in a row and didn't look good in the process. He went to see the University President at the time, Dr Jarvis Miller to get a "vote of confidence". When he didn't get it, he quit.
There were also some rumors of asst coaches undermining him with the Big Money Ags and the administration One was Bellard's O.C. Tom Wilson, who replaced Bellard and underwhelmed magnificently.
Ballard definitely put a lot of pressure on himself....but this was another example of powerful alumni screwing things up.
