I'm currently in Hattiesburg. We're supposed to head to Panama city beach in the morning. Do I need to avoid I 10 completely? Best alternative? Thanks for any help.

US-98 from Hattiesburg to I-10 in Mobile is pretty much the best way to get there from Hattiesburg. (You can also shoot down MS-63 from Lucedale to Pascagoula, but it will take longer and you'll still be on I-10 from there.)
However, you can avoid the I-10 tunnel in Mobile by taking the US-90 bridge across the river at Pritchard (which I recommend) then either staying on US-90 to Spanish Fort or getting back on I-10 at the Mobile Bay bridge.
It's going to be a wet drive any way you slice it. Be safe.

We were considering heading back north from here and going east on 84. No idea what that would be like though.

The bad weather is pretty spread out right now. US-84 sucks and it's non-limited access and thus dangerous. If it was me I'd just take I-10 and allow for time to pull off and wait out the weather.

Thanks. That's what we decided. In Mobile now. No problems so far.
