The assistant supervisor at the shop I work at tried the "grinds" alternative. It was the grinds mixed with cream, sugar, and honey but it wasn't the pouches. He let me try it and it was not awful. Tasted just like coffee but man it was messy.

While I was first quitting I did use a couple of cans of Smokey Mountain Wintegreen. I was used to Copenhagen Long Cut but the Wintegreen flavor of Smokey Mtn had enough "bite" to substitute. Of course that does nothing to feed the nicotine addiction, and it's as bad for your teeth (I think it has sugar/molasses) but as a quitting tool it was pretty good.

In fact it was good enough that I felt like I was cheating--so I put that down and just gobbled sunflower seeds and wint-o-green lifesavers for a little while.
